Areas of Practice

Meredith G. Fierro focuses her practice on government and administrative law, election law, appeals, and criminal defense. She has argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and the Massachusetts Appeals Court.

Ms. Fierro represents public officials, governmental bodies, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individuals in complex matters involving government action and public law. Her practice includes administrative and constitutional law, public records and open meeting law, public retirement law, lobbying law, campaign finance law, and challenges to government agency action. She represents clients on both sides of administrative disputes, defending governmental decisions as well as challenging agency actions on behalf of individuals and private entities.

Ms. Fierro also advises clients on Massachusetts election law compliance and the initiative petition process, including drafting ballot measures, certification by the Attorney General, and constitutional challenges before the Supreme Judicial Court.

Ms. Fierro’s appellate practice spans a broad range of civil and criminal matters.  Her appellate experience includes matters involving public retirement law, public records law, state ethics law, employment disputes, criminal prosecutions, insurance disputes, and harassment prevention orders.  Her appellate work frequently involves complex questions of statutory and regulatory interpretation, state constitutional law, and issues of first impression.  Ms. Fierro also partners with trial counsel on appeals, either taking lead at the appellate stage or working collaboratively with trial attorneys on appellate strategy, briefing, and oral argument.

Before joining Butters Brazilian, Ms. Fierro served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Constitutional & Administrative Law Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. She previously practiced government law, election law, white-collar criminal defense, and appellate litigation at Cosgrove, Eisenberg & Kiley (now CEK Boston). She began her legal career as a law clerk for the Massachusetts Appeals Court.
