Areas of Practice

Ms. Lemay is a trial lawyer whose practice spans complex civil and criminal litigation, with particular strength in survivor advocacy, appellate work, professional discipline, criminal defense, and civil rights litigation.

Survivor Advocacy

Ms. Lemay represents survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and non-consensual intimate image abuse (NCII), both in connection with criminal investigations and in civil suits against individual abusers and the institutions that enabled them. She and Ms. Keeley are the first lawyers in Massachusetts to represent NCII survivors in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts and are recognized leaders in the cyber civil rights field.

A key part of Ms. Lemay’s work is also defending survivors when abusers try to weaponize the courts against them — often through retaliatory defamation suits meant to punish survivors for speaking out. In the past year, Ms. Lemay has gotten three such retaliatory suits dismissed (Federal Court, Middlesex Superior Court, and Suffolk Probate and Family Court) and continues to bring this fight into courts across the Commonwealth on behalf of survivors targeted for coming forward.

Before entering private practice, Ms. Lemay completed a two-year Equal Justice Works Fellowship at Greater Boston Legal Services focused on representing and advocating for perinatal survivors of intimate partner violence. In addition to courtroom advocacy, Ms. Lemay helped win priority childcare vouchers for low-income survivors statewide.

Appellate Work

Ms. Lemay has won at the Massachusetts Appeals Court. She also successfully flipped an initial denial by a Single Justice on a G.L. c. 211, § 3 petition, taking the matter to the full Supreme Judicial Court and securing full briefing and oral argument. That appellate discipline — thinking several moves ahead, writing for the judges who’ll decide on the record — shapes how she litigates from day one.

Professional Discipline

Ms. Lemay defends attorneys whose careers are on the line before the Board of Bar Overseers (BBO). She is currently representing a lawyer facing charges under the Massachusetts Rules of Professional Conduct, and has twice before gotten investigations closed at an early stage with no charges brought.

Criminal Defense & Civil Rights

Ms. Lemay also handles criminal defense, white-collar defense, employment law, Title IX investigations, and civil rights litigation, including representing clients under investigation by federal and state authorities such as the Attorney General’s Office.

Her civil rights work includes representing an attorney whose phone was seized without a warrant by federal agents at Logan Airport, in a case alleging he was targeted in retaliation for public criticism of government immigration enforcement. Ms. Lemay secured a temporary restraining order barring the government from searching the phone or using any data extracted from it.

More on Mary Lemay

Ms. Lemay knew she wanted to be a lawyer from age thirteen, after developing a love for mock trial. During law school at Northeastern, she served as a Senior Staffer for the Law Review and as a student attorney in the Domestic Violence Clinic. Before law school, she worked in the Gaming Enforcement Division at the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. She was a varsity lacrosse and field hockey athlete in undergrad and remains an avid supporter of women’s sports.

Ms. Lemay has built a wide network across Massachusetts — community health centers, medical professionals, social workers, legislators, and other lawyers — through her courtroom work and legislative advocacy alike.

She prioritizes early, honest communication with clients and is transparent from the first meeting about what a case will require. She works to make the legal process accessible, meets clients where their schedules demand, and stays invested well beyond the life of a case — she’s still in touch with some of her earliest clients. Clients don’t just hire Ms. Lemay — they trust her with the hardest moment of their lives, and she doesn’t take that lightly.
